Why do we have such a variation in sizes of beds and what problems do they present to craftsmen who after all are simply looking to make a crib which you will be ultra comfortable laying your head down on? Size Matters when you are considering a Mattress!
When making a bed for a customer the first question to ask must be What size bed are you looking for? This is the imperative before you can start to consider the ‘bells and whistles’ An easy thing to qualify? Hardly! – The standard bed measurements for a queen size bed (for example) does not exist, bed sizes differ within main land Europe as well as from the UK and Ireland. So where do we begin…?
Ok so here goes:
In the UK and Ireland the standard queen size bed is 60 inches “150cm” wide and 78 in “200cm” long, in Europe 63 in “160cm” wide and 78 in “200cm” long. Here in Mallorca Spain there is a large range of widths and length available for you to choose from. For those of you looking to commission a bed, made to order, then below is a list of the most common standard dimensions for off-the-shelf mattresses, slated bases and divans to create your bed around:
As a rule – the default measurements for all designers of beds are as given below:
Childrens Beds and single beds
Widths = 80 & 90 cm
x
Lengths = 180, 190 & even 200cm.
Double bed sizes:
Widths = 140 & 150 cm
x
lengths = 190 & 200cm.
Queen Size & King Size Beds
Widths = 160 & 180 cm
x
length = 200cm
