The History Of The Bed -
The bed has long been considered a status symbol and one of the most important pieces of furniture in the home. Some of the earliest beds were formed in a shallow crate like box or chest that would help to reduce the cold caused by drafts.
Sleep Like an Egyptian?
The ancient Egyptians used their beds for more than just for sleeping, beds were used as a place to eat and a platform to entertain their guests. Modern beds date back to the 15th century in its simplest form made from rope or leather straps stretched over a timber frame with a bag filled with straw. In the late 19th century iron and steel replaced the traditional timber framed beds. With the outbreak of the first world war wood made it´s revival and today is still the most popular medium in the construction of beds.
The History Of The Mattress -
The modern mattress first appeared in the 15th century made from a large cloth bag filled with straw and occasionally wool or animal hair. In the mid 18th century the mattress was made using a shallow wooden or cane box filled with the softest natural materials available such as wool, cotton, horse hair and coconut fibres with good quality linen or cotton stretched and tacked across the box.

Later the mattresses that we would recognize as modern became tufted or buttoned to hold the filling in place and covered on all six sides in fabric with stitched edging. Pocket spring mattresses were also introduced in the late 1920s these were individual springs sewn into a interlinked fabric bag with a layer of wading covered with high quality cotton.
